What is the best way to get around chicago?

I am staying at the Inn of chicago magnificent mile and I will be going to the shedd aquarium and the field museum of natural history. also some other places. I have a 3 year old and I learned that you have to have a car seat in cabs. Just wondering what is the cheapest and best way to get around chicago?
