What are the names for the monomers and polymers of proteins? Why do they have these names?

A monomer refers to a subunit of the protein called an amino acid. A group of monomers, called a polymer, come together to make a protein. Mono-, in simple terms, can be described as one. Whereas poly- refers to more than one.
